Getting the Wheeling Fever

OK Lads, I am going to start with the trans removal. I see how the transfer shifter comes out by removal of the snap ring but there is no such ring or screws for the trans shifter. The book states "Special Tool From Dealer". Please say it isn't so. Is there another way around this???? Thanks in advance.
