Getting the Wheeling Fever
OK Lads, I am going to start with the trans removal. I see how the transfer shifter comes out by removal of the snap ring but there is no such ring or screws for the trans shifter. The book states "Special Tool From Dealer". Please say it isn't so. Is there another way around this???? Thanks in advance.

Wait, your just doing this so you can remove the transmission? All you have to do is remove the 4 bolts holding the shifter plate to the tran (same with transfer) and the whole plate lifts off. No snap rings.

Adam, just going by what the book says. The plate you refer to is the one that if removed also takes both levers with it?. Seems to me it opens up a big hole for dirt to fall into. Also, by removing the plate, are there any linkages inside that are going to get disturbed?. The last time I had to take a trans out it was a 3 speed colum shift.

Yep, just remove the 4 bolts and lift off the entire shifter mechanism. It will leave a big hole in the trans, just cover it up somehow. I just stuff a rag in there. You could tape it up or something.

Linkages wont be disturbed. Put the levers in neutral and remove them. When you go to reinstall, just reinstall with the levers in neutral again.

Am I missing something here? No need to remove the bolts and plate on my 4 Runner and I don't think I could with it in the truck without cutting the floor.
Just push down and turn the cup shaped doodad until it lines up with the lugs and lift the whole shifter out - like you would do if you were just changing the nylon parts in there.

I always unbolted the shifter plate. But I do have a 3" body lift. Not sure if that makes it any easier.

Roll Me Over
If you just want to take out the arm, push that thing down and turn it counterclockwise a 1/4 turn. It's spring loaded. then it should pull right out.
