I've been messing with my wife's first black 4-door, Bonnie, for about a year. The Monty feels like it wants to start and will idle rough once for about 500 rpm/5 seconds. No restart available. I've changed out the fuel, plugs, TPS, idle air motor, ECU, coil and module next door, wire, cap & rotor, air cleaner assembly with attached things. Always the same.

Timing marks are lined up. Haven't changed the distributor or fuel filter yet, those are next. What else? I really like carb'd things, so far haven't had luck with the FI problems...

You've about covered the electrical ideas - how 'bout the fuel filter, fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator? Vacuum leaks?

Russ, its not throwing any codes is it? Yes the CEL should illuminate, but when I first got Betsy II it had a code stored, but the CEL had been removed. Just a thought - would at least tell you that the computer was happy with the FI stuff that it talks to. For the sake of 30 seconds and a voltmeter, it wouldn't waster that much time...

Ya fuel pumps my bet when mine went out it would run if you "choked" it by putting your hand over intake for the air, then it would run but only long enough until the ratio got screwed up again

Roll Me Over
id change the filter before anything else, cheap and easy.
can you (or get it to somebody) do a fuel pressure test along with a vaccuum dripdown test? so much comes to mind, ranging from the paranoid to absolutly so simple its stupid... after i did my heads/timing frank had to talk me down from the clocktower, my books were dead wrong on reinstalling the dizzy. i know you know your stuff, but where does your rotor point at tdc? mine did almost the exact same until i was walked through it. it took me longer to read franks brilliant write up than to get her started. in my case, no codes were thrown for either fuel or timing.
just out of curiosity parts guy, did this just happen or was something torn into for anykind of repair or scheduled maintenance? also, what year/engine... im sure it has been posted but i havnt seen it?

Yeah, sounds like a fuel-delivery problem (filter, pump, screen, clog).

That reminds me of a story I heard on Paul Harvey yesterday: some guy kept having trouble with his gas guage...it would never read below half, even if he was certain he was just about out of gas. He took it to a shop and they dropped the tank and opened it up. They found a bunch of marijuana in the gas tank. [Linked Image]

I can guarantee it 'wasn't' removed.

Yeah, see??

CEL? Reading codes? Guess I'll have to break out my books...

Thanks for some other starting points.

Check engine light. No books required, just some old 'wire reading:

(funny, this is the second time I've posted this link this evening! )
