38 3/4" from center to center, on the center bolt holes that connect to the frame (underside).

I fitted a genII bumper to my second genI back in the day, and it went on perfectly. I did have to use some washers, but the trailer hitch bolt holes may be spot on...?

Thanks Phil! I measured mine to be ~36.5 from inside edge to inside edge of each frame rail. Going to the center would likely give the measurement you have. I'll check it more carefully now. Thanks!

Can't believe it's been Feb since I updated this *build* thread (if you can call it that?). I didn't stop working on the truck, just got caught up on some maintenance as the spring and thus Moab approached...

I did install Aisin Manual hubs, so that's an upgrade right? I also got a locker and the associated wiring/compressor/switch, just need to find a new actuator so I can put it in when the gears are swapped...

Anyway, this week I got a proper rack (well, it's light weight aluminum, but it's proper as far as I'm concerned, since it will barely affect my all too important COG). It's a Surco Safari rack. It came with a spare carrier too, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna use it, since I'm always on the ragged edge of rolling, out on the trail, and putting something big and heavy like a tire up top seems a bit daft to me... I wanted the rack mainly for throwing my tentcot up there in a waterproof bag, so I could leave the inside for important stuff like buddies, dogs (one and the same sometimes) and gear.

The PO of the rack removed the peeling powdercoat, and clear lacquered the aluminum. Still not sure if I'm enamoured with how it looks up there (I'll let you be the judge after I post some pics), but its on, in any event...

Put the Surco Safari rack on, and then we took the trailer almost to the US border (just on the Canadian side of Glacier National Park: Waterton Lakes Nat'l Park). I've left it clear-coated aluminum for now, but am still thinking about back to black...

No noticeable noise increase or fuel consumption, although I was towing our trailer, so that may have mitigated any differences... I'm looking forward to throwing my tentcot up there for the next wheeling adventure, but that'll probably be the heaviest thing up there (I did get a spare tire mount - maybe for Moab I'll use it?)

Two and a half YEARS since my last update? Lame!!!

Not a lot has been done, truth be told. I did slash two sidewalls in Moab on Seven Mile Rim, so I got two new BFG muds at Chip's Tires (that guy is a character - worth your while to go in and visit him next time you're in Moab!)



Also FINALLY got rid of the gold stripe and lettering. Changed the single DIN stereo to a double DIN, put the trailer plug IN the bumper instead of under, and added a whole bunch of miles.

I've now had this truck since December of 2008, and am hoping to keep it till at least early 2015, at which time I plan to start looking for a shorty genIII with that sweet 3.2 DiD diesel.

Still have to hook up my trans temp guage, and have a few other little plans for it this summer... I'll update again with some pics soon.
