If that was true and the gauge was just going to some pre-specified mid location, then I would not expect the gauge to ever move with engine speed. I don't doubt they do use gauges like that in place of idiot lights in some vehicles, but I have to believe if the gauge is moving with engine speed, then it has to actually be reading oil pressure. If I had my way, and it wasn't my daily driver that I wanted to keep clean, I would have all mechanical gauges.

Just my 2 cents.
