OK Lads picture this, I finaly got my trans out of the 91 PU to check out whats with the non functioning clutch. Well the clutch plate grenaded with many loose parts jamed everywhere. The big surprise is there is no pilot shaft bearing. No pieces, no grease, no wear on the end of the trans shaft no nothing to indicate there ever was one there. There isn't any noticable lateral play in the trans shaft. It appears the thing was assembled with out a bearing. May have been apart before though. The actual mileage is 108,000 but on the clutch plate it says " Made in Korea " I doubt thats an original piece.Being this truck never made an excessive amount of chatter when taking off I never suspected a bad bearing much less none at all which you would cause the input shaft to be jumping all around.I have been driving this thing for 4 yrs like the old guy I am and I cant believe there was no pilot bearing or that the clutch looks like it came out of a vehicle that has been beat to death to make it explode like it did.

Hmmm, sounds familiar! I just replaced my clutch, that had grenaded and discovered that when I rebuilt the engine 3 or so years ago I hadn't put a pilot bearing in, this being my first time ever rebuilding an engine and not knowing any better. Worked great for those 3 years, no chattering or odd noises...until the clutch decided to blow apart and come out in 3 pieces. My post with pics is up here if you wanna take a look.

Would I be wrong in thinking: Without the pilot bearing in that crank, wouldn't the wear be more in that transmission bearing than anywhere else? The shaft doesn't move in or out, but instead rests in that bearing..all the time. Right? So if there's no support on that end of the shaft, wouldn't that lead to alot of strain on the transmission end?

Everyone thought the trans input shaft would have a lot of play in it but it dont. I went to the toyota dealer and got the right bearing . I wanted to try it first to make sure the trans shaft and crank were ok. Both were. End of trans just needed a little emery cloth touch up. So I went ahead and ordered the new parts from the dealer. They dont stock parts for 91s anymore but can have them in a day.
