If you want drivability and are thinking of driving the miles why not buy a crapped out gen 3 at a parts yard and swap the 3.5L and auto trans into your rig. You would end up spending the same ammount of money but would retain the look of you ride but obtain better fuel economy and a bigger engine.

Where's the reliability in that? He would still have a 20+ year old truck, with Gen I 2.6L small parts.

Les, I think for your 4x4 needs the Sport will work fine for you. It looks like a good deal, try out your bargaining skills.

On the other hand, you did started off by saying you wanted a new Montero and a Sport is not.

Body Damage is Cool
2000+ are not bad comfort wise they got rear coils on 3.0L so it's very similar to Gen 2. The truck you posted is too much money still. Personally I would look for XLS (if you particular about mileage you get with 3.0) because it was available with Hybrid LSD (nice), not on all of them though. Better yet look for 2003+ rigs. With some bargaining price should be 5-6k range. Although then XLS becomes 3.5L. Reason 2003,2004 Sports got raised roof which gives you extra inch or so of headroom (quite noticeable actually).

I was actually disappointed with mine and i had coils 3.0 and 4.90's. The truck was a good truck but no montero not even close. It felt exactly like the pickup it shares a frame with. I'm not trying to bad mouth the sport because i did like it and would get another if the price was right, it's just no Montero.

Try driving the speed limit. 65 mph = 19 mpg

Have you been on the 5 or the 10 recently. You know the speed limit is 85 in fast lane It gets old real fast following the big rigs in the slow lane

I cant' figure out how to use the quote feature, anyway-

I had three of the 2.6L Monteros and a 2.6L Mighty Max. 19 MPG - never, ever.

Look for an 89 SWB. Bigger tank, more power, better mileage. I also had a 50 gallon tank made to fit over the axles of my 4X8 custom built utility trailer (made to carry camping gear anywhere my Raider will go).

Actually if you want gas mileage, you need the 90 with the lockup torque converter.

As for using the quote feature, everything within the bracketed quote and /quote will be 'quoted'.

Well, I was going to post a pic showing you how I created this message but montypic's won't load up right now.

Update the dealer is offering $4200. Not bad for a 2001. I'm familiar with how trucks drive. I owned a 4Runner

I wish you could try a genII JDM diesel. Great MPG, great handling, comfortable... it'd be exactly what you want, Les. But you can't import one, and swaps are so much of a PITA as to be not worth the time/$ unless its a hobby rig, and you wanna spend as much time tinkering as driving it. Not that that's a bad thing, but doesn't sound like its the route you want to go. So barring that, I'd go with a genIII, no hesitation. I'd probably still hold out for a 3.8. May as well get as much engine as you can, if you're trading up?
