I am so depressed. This is going to leak isn't it?

I was drilling a tiny pilot hole before drilling the hole for a screw for pull the seal. My arm slipped and the drill bit slipped between the crank and the seal

All this work and it's still going to drip oil

Try using some light sandpaper like 200 or so maybe even higher, emery cloth would be good and try to polish it out, your gonna have to clean the crack surface anyway, also you could look into a wear sleeve if there is one available. I've had people at work do alot worse with a screwdriver trying to spin out main bearings. And we just polish them out.

Start with a file, if you have a small wetstone would be nice.
The file will get the edge off and you the assess it at that point.

From the looks of it once you have filed it the best you can so it will not cut the new seal, install the seal shallow so the lip will run out on the undamaged area.

Sorry for the panic and thanks for the help guys.

Does this look OK? I'll polish some more. I have little scotchbrite wheels for my dremel.

Reuben, I think I'd leave it alone and run it. Pretty sure you'll be fine.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

That should be good. Due to the direction of rotation that is not prone to cut the seal.
Again when you install the seal do not seat it home, make sure it is solidly and squarely in but leave it out 2 or 3mm so the lip runs on undamaged surface.

looks ok to me.

you can also try to position the lip of the seal to not ride on that spot.

see if any of the parts stores have a "crank saver". its a very thin metal sleeve that slips over the seal surface of the crank.
