Here are the ballistics for the 45-70, your aiming 78.6 inches high at 300 yards to be on target. Bottom number are my 7mm Ultra Mag

Then look at the muzzle velocity, 1330 fps on the 45-70 vs 3325 fps on the 7mm. At 300 yard the 45-70 only has 858 ft-lbs of knock down while the 7mm has 2364 ft-lbs.

So I stick to my "guns" that the 45-70 is only a short range solution and 7mm ultra mag packs 3x the knock down at 100 yards.
