So I stick to my "guns" that the 45-70 is only a short range solution .

ACTUALLY...

Some of the longest range shots EVER made were with a 45-70.

"I got to doing some research the other day on the net and came across this article of some tests done with extreme long range shooting with a .45-70 rifle. These tests were done way back in 1879. The original loading for the .45-70 cartridge was a 405 gr. bullet backed by 70 grains of black powder. They came up with a new loading with a 500 gr. bullet and shot it "artillery style" at some targets set up 3500 yds away. Yes, you read correct, that's 3,500 yds (1.98 miles) away. It was determined that even though 1000 yds was found to be the max. effective range for aimed fire at man sized targets, the 500 gr. .45-70 was still capable of delivering a lethal injury to an enemy even out to 3,500 yds away. At the 3500 yd mark they discovered that the bullets (coming downward at a 30 deg. angle) would still penetrate through (3) 1" thick oak planks and then buried themselves in the sandy beach to a depth of 8!"

I'm not a fan of the 45-70 either, but it seems that it's certainly a long range cartridge, though not a flat shooting one.
