The old seal sticking to the engine is not the problem. I have had that happen on a Subaru before. After start and pressure builds the oil starts to blow all over the place. Now I always look at the old filter to make sure the seal stayed on the filter.

I have checked the seat and there are not nicks. I wonder if the when the oil filter is old and possible starting to clog the pressure might be high enough to cause the leak? But, this has never happened to any car or truck I have ever had.

When I replace the current filter which is leaking. I will take if the seal is the O ring type or flat surface type.
