Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hey you guys, I tried to get my '87 2.6 raider to pass smog, and she is a no go. The Co2 readings were off the charts. He said that it is getting to much fuel and choking. It runs fine sitting still, but gets a little funny under payload. Any ideas? I've been trying to find a new or rebuilt carb, with no luck:(

Welcome to the forum. I know this has been discussed quite a bit and there are many who know that Mikuni Carb quite well.
I'd say for starters, check all (ALL) your vacuum lines and make sure they work and aren't leaking. It seems to be one of the top failure area's in these older carbs.
There are other things which I'm sure others will advise you on.

1. compression check, if within range then... 2. Rebuilt carb from FC products 3. New Cat 4. New plugs, use only NGK OEM plugs in the correct range. 5. Tune up and oil change use 20-50. 6. check all the vac lines by pulling one by one and checking for cracks on the back side. Many times the rubber has hardened and you need to cut off the bad part.
That got me thru 9 years of California Smog

This forum is the greatest thing ever. Everyone knows so much. I am curious tho, someone told me this carb has a wax ring in it and if it goes south then the carb is no good...Is this true?

Hey jeep to Raider, i moved to Kauai 8 years ago from Auburn area. Cali smog checks drove me nuts. We don't have them over here! I used to go to Truckee for my smog checks. They were way cooler about helping get my 4x4 passed then anyone down in town. Just an idea. Good Luck!

My friend's uncle who rebuilt the carbs has passed on. Just for the record, the registration address dictates the smog requirement. Truckee still falls in the portion of the state that requires the emission testing. The link below goes to the smog program map, last updates in 2005. California DMV Smog Program Map When you get the carb figured out, you might address the catalytic converter too. A few head gasket blows will kill the catalytic material.
