Been enjoying your write-up. How much difference does the gas make to your welding? My little 110v mig has gas capability, but I've never used it and I'm such an amature welder I don't think it would help me much. Just wondering. I can do reasonably well w/material less than 1/8" thick (getting at it from one side), but it's not pretty. Like to hear your take....
Thanks,
- Chris

For the thinner materials it really makes a big difference. I also like that I don't have to cleanup as much (minimal splatter). I am using the 75/25 (argon/co2) gas mix.

For the thicker material I still use the flux-core wire. I have a Lincoln SP140 110 unit that works really well.

I'll have to give the gas a try. I've got the Lincoln Pro-Core 100. Looks pretty much the same as the Sp 140. I've seen small tanks in Lowe's for pretty cheap (might have been just CO2), might start with that. Kewl! Thanks,

It should be an improvement even with strait co2. I tried it with co2 but the spatter was still noticeable. Of course this was with a ReadyWelder II that attached to batteries. I just could never dial it in to weld properly. It might of been the ReadyWelder that was the problem though.

Let us know how strait co2 does for you.

Update:
I finally got started on the passenger side fender. This one should go a lot smoother from the lessons learned from doing the driver side.

I drilled the rear and front brackets and welded the top and bottom tubes in place. I also welded the top plate to the tubes. This plate required some modifications due to the fuse box and the battery.

I am off to Dallas to visit the King Tut exhibit on Saturday. Will continue working on the fender next week.

I will post some pictures later on today (forgot my memory card at home).

Some pics of the King Tut exhibit would be really cool too...Not like I'll be able to get there. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

How long is that exhibit in dallas? Sounds pretty interesting. Though I could have sworn I've seen it here already before.

You know the bad thing is that they did not allow photos to be taken once inside the exhibit. So no pictures of the actual artifacts. The great thing is that some of the items that we see in those black and white original photos of when they found the tomb, are in the exhibit.

It's running from October 3, 2008 to MAY 2009.
