One week before the Moab UT trip. Still have some repairs to do on the jeep before its ready. This should be a very short week.

Leaving Saturday April 25th and getting to Moab on Sunday. It should be a total of 18:30 hours.

Oh Pflugeee! I've made that trip a hundred times and never thought of going that way.. We ALWAYS go Brownwood, Abilene, Big Spring, Lubbock, Clovis to Albuquerque.. From there the guide is about right. Your map doesn't even show hiway US183 ! It's a great ride and there are actually some gas stations and folks beside the hiway!!
If you MUST use I-10 at least go thru Mason to get there instead of Fredricksburg..
Have a great trip and a goood time, however you go.

You know that's not a bad idea (the new route).

That route still does not include Arlington. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Have fun, and be safe. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

If you get there in the daytime you can see Billy the Kid's grave on that route..
You will like that drive much better than the other one..
Fill up in Galup and don't stop in the reservation..
Say hello to Shiprock and the folks in Cortez as you pass thru..

Thanks BigJim, Unfortunately it will be night driving thru most of Texas. Trying to get a head start on the drive up there.

Got some stuff done on the jeep.

First I installed the JK lights on the jeep. Holes cut under the lights.

Lights installed: (Diet Dr Pepper, the drink of champions!)

Wired up the lights so they all work with the parking and turn signal. Jeep looks really nice with the JK lights.

Now to the fenders. Everything was going really nice and I was hoping to have them ready for the trip to Moab next week. But I ran into a snag. Here are some pics of the fenders getting primed.

When I started the project, I completed the driver side first. I kind of when a little fast as I was exited about building them. The passenger side when a little more smooth since I knew what I was doing. After completing the passenger side, I decided to go back and redo some parts of the driver side fender. In doing that I messed up the alignment to a point that I might have to redo it. Since I knew I had very little time to really work on the fender, it has to wait till I get back from Moab. Oh well, at least the lights look nice [Linked Image]

Some updates on the trip to Moab.

First off, this is a great place to wheel! You can make most trails as had or easy as you like, just by taking different lines. The scenery is great.

I took off on Friday April 24th at about 6:30 pm. Drove till about 4:00 am and took a break at a rest area in New Mexico. Continued my drive at about 7:00 am and arrived in Moab at about 4:30. The drive took longer than what I had planned but I took a more scenic route this time.

Some phone pictures of the trip up there thru the Texas back country:

Austin Traffic at 6:30.

I took some elevation readings:

It got as high as 8,387 feet

Driving into Moab

They were having a show car rally on Sat and Sun so we got to enjoy some bumper to bumper congestion for those 2 days. Imagine leaving the congestion in Austin only to hit some congestion in the little town of Moab!

Now for the wheeling.

I wheeled for 3 days but I had to cut my vacation short and leave on Wednesday. What a bummer but at least I got to enjoy 3 days of nice wheeling in Moab.

Sunday

On Sunday we drove Hells Revenge. It is classified a 4+ trail.

Here is a short description of the trail:
Quote
The first optional obstacle is just off the paving of Sand Flats Road. The "Dump Bump" is the most difficult way to mount the sandstone fin that begins the trail. Your tires may slip a little even on the bypass. After passing through a low area that often stands with a foot or more of water and passing by a ridge that overlooks Lion's back and the Moab Dump, the slick rock fun begins. Steep ascents, sharp turns and steep descents will be the order of the day. Keep the vehicle in front closely in sight or you can get into serious trouble fast. A steep hair-raising descent on a narrow ridge allows no room for error left or right. As you start the decent your 4X4's hood will drop a long way before you can even see the narrow ridge top in front. After that is the Tip-Over Challenge which has seen many a 4X4 rise to the challenge and tip over. The Rubble Trouble Hill leads the way back toward smoother roadway and civilization.

Still pics of my jeep:

First major obstacle: Hells Gate
Going up Hells Gate. You first have to go down a steep ravine and come back up the other side. This is the same one where a jeep falls all the way down after taking a wrong line. Link to YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouWJa6FC7-E
