SAS Trooper using Scout II donor (maybe) #939125 04/06/09 04:43 PM

Does anyone have any words of wisdom on a SAS using a '77 Scout II front axle? May have the chance to get the front axle for nothing and wondering if it would be worth putting under my '89 Trooper. It does have disc brakes but has a 5 lug wheel vs. the 6 of the Trooper. Can that be converted?

Can it be converted? Of course, enough money can convert anything. Just ask Curtis and his locking hub conversion on the rear of his Rodeo. Of course, he also paid with a good bit of headache too.

The questions is: Do you want to (or can you) mess with it?

The preferred D44 axle is fom the Wagoneer. Someone here will be able to give you some ideas about the binder axle, but...I would ask, why make it harder than need be.

Read. Lots of good info.

consider the cost of a junkyard waggy D44 is typically between $100-$200 without too much trouble. you may spend that on coverting the axle even if you got it for free.

Is the bolt pattern on the Wagonneer 44 the same as the Trooper (or Toyota) so i could run my same wheels? What about the width?

If you are really set on doing this, you've got to do your homework. There are a lot of folks who have gone before you, luckily they sometimes bless us with their presence.

yes, old jeeps and chevys use the same 6-lug pattern as isuzu and toyota. and based on you asking that question, I would take some time to do some heavy research before picking up any parts for an SAS, free or otherwise.
