Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello all......noob here. Been lurking for a coupld of days before registering. Did many searches, with no clear cut answers(maybe i suck at the search engine on this forum). But was wondering if there is a link or if anyone know the different widths (WMS-WMS) of the montero axles?? And gear ratios?? I have a nissan X and am maybe looking at using the rear of an SR depending on the width, or another montero axle. The X is currently gathering parts for SAS and 4wd convert. Any info on axle widths would be great. And are you able to swap a Gen 2 3rd member into a Gen1? And would a '95 SR for sure have the air locker? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Lots of good info on the site, but just couldn't find any clear cut answers. Thanks again! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

A 95-97 SR without a locker would be a rare bird. Earlier is not so much a sure bet.

The early SRs 92 and 93 I think, had the 9 in diff with or without locker. My 93 has 4.875 gears. The later SRs had the 9.5in diff. So, no, the late SRs third member will not bolt to the gen1 axle. I also dont know what is different between the gen2 9in and the gen1 9in.

What is wrong with the Nissan axle? What are you using for the front? What gears do you want to go with? What tcase?

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Thanks for the info guys. Nothing is wrong with the Nissan H233b rear axle. It is pretty stout....downside is selectable locker options(ARB), and drum brakes. So the 59" WMS is for the '95 SR rear axle? The front axle is a Wagoneer Dana 44. Currently going to be running the stock t-case (maybe upgrade the gears if funds are available). The other rear end i was thinking of was that from a '97-'99 Isuzu rodeo(Dana 44 with discs and 60.5" WMS).Looking to run 4.88-4.9 ratio(currently have 4.9 ratio in the rear) Thanks again for the info....keep it comming.

The Pathfinder was available with rear disc brakes using the H233b rear axle, but was set up for coil springs. You could probably use the brake bits in the leaf spring axle. I've seen numerous Pathfinders in the yards recently.

Some folks have used the Montero Sport rear axle, too, with the discs.

The pathy uses 31 spline axles, the X uses 33 spline, so it would be a downsize in strength(and there have been people who have broke the 31 spline....and they break at the spline). The other way i think requires pressing the pathy bearing off the pathy axle and press is onto the X axle shaft.....but there has been some conflicting info on this(bearing diameters are different, etc..). Thanks for the info and suggestions guys. So a '95 SR should have the locker, and the width is 59" WMS-WMS? Great site guys with good answers and helpful info. Thaks for all the info and help, and i'll keep searching the site too. Keep the info/suggestions comming,Thanks.

All 95-97 SRs had lockers and all had 59 width. Now, 95-96 had 4.636 axle ratio and 97 was 4.272. Same for 98-99 but not all had lockers. X is rear leaf springs right? So It might be easier to get axle out of Montero Sport. All of pre 2000 were leaf with ether 4.636 or 4.272 (for bigger 3.5L 9.5" ring gear) both of those were also available with lockers on some models. 2000+ 3.0L Sports got coil springs but 3.5L stayed with leaf. No selectable lockers there but some were equipped with very good (possibly best in class) Hybrid LSD. On plus side they all had 4.9 axle ratio.

Thanks for the info Alex. So a Montero sport housing would be better suited due to leaf spring perches. Now, can I take the SR 3rd member and use it in the Sport housing, and use the sport 4.9 gears??(if i can be lucky enought to find a sport in the yard as well). Thaks again.
