Not so fast. Using SR 3rd member requires using it's axle shafts. I believe you can mate those to leaf axle also gaining additional benefit of disk brakes. MSport had drum in rear on leaf axle. So the easier would be to find MSport Ltd 98-99 axle with locker already. Again it will have 4.272 ratio so you would need to either source 2000+ 3rd from MSport XLS or Ltd (they both had 3.5L = big axle and 4.9 ratio) then swap the gears or get new set from dealer.

Ok, so in order to use the SR 3rd member on a Sport axle housing is by using the axles and the SR 3rd memeber correct??? And then find a Sport with 4.9 gears, and take the ring and pinion from those??? Thanks for thje insight Alex. Exact info i am looking for. Thanks again.

We had a round of posts a short while ago on Mitsu axles, lockers, coils versus leaf, etc. In that thread I asked about the notion of difficulty in fitting an SR axle to a leaf-sprung SWB, as for where I am, finding an SR locker would be much easier than an MS locker.
Curtis of course was quick to respond along the lines of "hell yes, do it and let us know how it works out."
I looked under my 95 last week, and also the SWB. Looks to me to be pretty damned easy to set up the SR axle for the SWB. Or more to the point, it looks to be much easier that building some Franken-Mitsu-stein axle out of pieces-parts. Looks to me like you might even spend more time grinding off the coil hardware than you'll spend fabbing the leaf pads (or whatever their proper name is).
FWIW...
Now if only I had looked before the Pull-A-Part scrapped the 95 SR they had. I could have locked the SWB for ~$200 and some time.

If i was to get the '95 SR axle, i was planning on cutting of the coil perches and welding on leaf spring pearches. But if by some stroke of luck there was a sport axle along with that SR axle, it wouldnt take to long to swap the SR diff and axles into the Sport housing(joy of 3rd members and lack of C-clips). Now.....if a 90-93(i think this is the year range) SR axle is at the yard, is it a gaurante like the 95 to have an air locking diff, or pretty much see if the button is there for it?? And the difference between the 93 axle is a smaller ring gear(9" vs 9.5")?? Thanks for all your help and information guys, you guys really are helping figure out the axle situation.

Yeah, I thought after I posted that if you are talking SAS, you know the possibilities thatlie out there. Smaller diff on the earlier SRs and hit or miss on locker. Need to look for the switch as you said.

Smaller ring gear smaller axles 28 spline 1.2" v 31 spline 1.4" on 95+ (actually it started in early 94)SR. Lockers on 91-93 are pretty rare. But the come with 4.875 axle ratio.

Factory only. 4.9 is lowest you can get for "big" axle. 5.29 is available overseas for smaller 9" axle
