Your gears will be on the plate in the engne bay. Between the Gen I and II, one is usually 4.625 and the other 4.636. I never remember which without looking at mine.

As for the rear disks, how is your rear sprung now on the 89? If coils, best overall route is to swap an SR locking axle in. No real "upgrades" to the stock drum axle. Some overseas market I think had rear disk possibilites.

Gen1s had 4.625 gen2 4.636. Overseas some had disc brakes on gen1s. You could swap if a v6 you could swap the whole axle. If a 4 cyl, you could get a Montero sport axle with disc brakes. Both of those are also available with a locker.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

bid axle Montero(Pajero) with 4.9 was only available overseas on 2.8TD version.
Montero Sport 2000+ 3.5L versions came with 4.9 in big axle but didn't have selectable locker. They only had LSD (all of Ltd and some of XLSs) albeit very good (possibly best?) one.
I you want to install locker into that you would need 3rd member and axles out of 98-99 Monty. They either swap R&P or modify existing house to accept airline and switch, and swap lockable differential only.

Alternatively you can get M/S axle and install new ARB locker which are just coming out.

Thanks again Alex. So...if tney have Montero sport, it may have 4.9 ratio gears? Are these axles tagged, or are they listed on the door jamb sticker or underhood? So right now...if the moons align at the junk yard.....get the 95 SR rear axle.....and if a montero sport is around with 4.9 gears.....steal the gears and swap them onto the 95 SR 3rd member (of course setting up properly with checking backlash and teeth pattern...yada yada yada). Thanks again for all the info...this has been extremly helpful.

Yes you can do that. Also you can find those on 01-02 4 speed Montero with IRS.

Inside the engine bay, attached to the passenger side firewall is a plate and one row on the plate says.....oh man, can't remember exactly....'transaxle' (?) and then the R&P ratio. For example 4.272 gears will read 4272 on the plate.
