I was just wondering if anyone knows on these little engines is it possible to go from 2.3 to 2.5 by just replacing connecting rods, pistons, crankshaft. I know the difference is in the stroke, from 90mm 2.3, to 95mm 2.5. Is there any other difference on the engine.?
I just bought an 83 mighty max 4x4 turbo diesel, I'm planning on installing a strait 2.5" pipe and a custom made down pipe, electric cooling fan, and intercooler. Any other ways to increase hp/torque and MPG????

I've briefly looked at this and it seems possible. I just need to find the deck height specs on a 4D55 to compare to the 4D56. It looks like the 56 uses different rods & pistons to compensate for the longer stroke. Bore size is the same but pistons have a different part number.

How can I find the deck height for my engine, would a machine shop have that info? I have the repair manual for my 83 truck but it does not give me any specs for the deck, same on the 4d56. Let me know if you have better luck. Thanks for looking into it.

The block height is in the service specifications in the 4D56 manual. It's listed as 318.45-318.55 mm. I would think the height should be listed in a 4D55 service manual.
