Body Damage is Cool
As I'm dismantling my other '89 4runner (not my good '89 4runner <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />) I'm wondering if the front axle/differential assemblies are interchangeable across the years '86 - '95 and between 4 cyl and 6 cyl applications. I know there were some with auto-disconnect differential. Are there any other differences?

I'd like to rebuild the front axle assembly from my 4cyl '89 4runner parts truck and install 4.88 gears in it for my '93 V6 pickup. -- Matt

yep, all the same, as far as interchangability.
Later ones have the ADD system, as you mention - but you can put an ADD front diff on a non-ADD truck no problem, just permanently "fix" teh sliding rod in there and plug the vac lines.
but axles, gears, everything else is identical.

Question Reality.

Just remember....if you ever have do any "re-bearing work" that you have to know if your IFS carrier is out of a 4 cyl or a V6 model (V6 has larger 50mm carrier bearings)....and that's about the only notable difference. ZUK
