1986 Isuzu Trooper decided to spew a couple of quarts of oil a week ago, probably through the lame vacuum pump alternator device. Problem is the turbo is now making a racket, I replaced or better described as a re-swap of the turbo that was originally in there from one of the other Troopers I have, sigh. Thjat was about two months ago, I should have fixed the oil leak then but I have too many other projects happening right now, and besides that the only thing I use my Trooper for is wireless Internet installations, and the economy is so bad that I haven't had the hours to make up a decent work week in months, alas no money.

I parked the Trooper, and will pull the turbo, again, big sigh, and see about rebuilding it. The first turbo has a busted shaft, so it isn't fixable, but this one maybe. I am tempted to go with another vehicle, as ever since the first turbo blew big time, the engine is really gutless. I am looking at a Cummings diesel lustfully

Whether it will work in my Trooper or I have to change to a dodge body I haven't decided yet.
This means I may be interested in selling off my two Trooper diesel vehicles, I have no idea what they are worth, only what I have into them, $800.00 on the white low mileage Trooper and $1000.00 for the one I have been using for work, both need engine work now, one has a very clean body.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble you're having with the Troopers, and the lack of work that makes a bad thing worse. Maybe it will all come around eventually.

Hey thanks man
So what do you modders think of putting a six cylinder Cummings in a Trooper? Too big? Hehe

The 225t already gets crap fuel mileage. I probably ought to find a Dodge SUV to poke it into size wise and computability wise. That's why I have to consider letting them go, as a set. I like my Trooper, though, undecided.
Like I said I parked the work truck, before the turbo busted, right now it makes noise when warm. Engine and vehicle has 222000 or there abouts on the odometer. The other one has 100000 but the front dampener/gear on the crankshaft coming lose was never resolved, you can search the board for info on that one, actually on both I have documented all repairs and trouble shooting here

Could your exhaust possibly be clogged overheating your turbo? Jerrys mentioned a broken baffle blocking a muffler outlet before and a leaky one will sure make some build up in the tailpipe.
Just a hmmmm guess, they could have both been abused or worn out previously.

Hey thanks guys.
I have my Trooper in my shop now. Haven't done much yet, this recession sucks, I can't focus on the problem without worrying about how much anything I find wrong is going to cost.
I did check out the 4btswaps forum and really like it so a big thank you for sharing that. The Cummins four banger is a noisy engine, but dang, all that torque, gotta love that after trying to work the C233T. Unfortunately, ebay sellers are real proud of the Cummins, and that makes me appreciate the C223T more.
I'd love to put the Cummins 4BT in my F-150 4X4 and resurrect it as a biodiesel ranch-use serious off-road work truck, then the dream is dashed on the rocky shores of reality, by this friggin recession.

Anyway, yeah I was looking at the turbo and indeed it appears to be leaking into the exhaust. It had occurred to me that all that oil from the last turbo blowout was caught up in the baffles of the exhaust system but not that it would harm the replacement turbo. It makes sense. I'll look at that, maybe I'll pull the exhaust system off my other Trooper.

The important thing is to keep moving forward. I have the Trooper, I need to fix it no matter what else I do.
In the meantime a client for a WiFi installation I did way up in the mountains for a remote wireless link has become a good friend and has let me trade one repair for a down payment on a 1992 Dodge with the 6BT (6 cylinder) Cummins.

We'll see how that goes, hopefully I'll get more hours at work and life will resume financial normalcy soon.
Again thanks

I finally pulled the turbo for the third and hopefully final time. I found a guy in Alabama that does turbo rebuilds

I sent the turbo by UPS insured for $800 waiting on the edge of my seat for the diagnosis and estimate. Found some interesting info at his site www.turborepair.com where among other things it says they make an oil reservoir add on to help oil the turbo bearings during spool down.
In the meantime I will pull the alternator/vacuum pump and replace the O-rings and see if I can't stop one of the oil leaks.
Anyone got a source for the vacuum pump rebuild kits? Last time I used a square rubber VCR drive belt as an O-ring, I guess it didn't work very well, no doubt the wrong type of rubber to use in a biodiesel powered engine
