I run a Galaxy 949 tuned and aligned, 100% modulation, swings to about 16 watts from a 1 watt dead key. This is up through a Wilson 5000 mag mount antenna. Its a little tall, and bangs the low trees, but it doesn't hurt it none.
I can't see the use of a linear on the trail, this is kinda overkill. I hang out on a Cb radio forum as well. A linear is fun for talking DX when the conditions are there, thats about it. Also illegal on 11m band, not that thats much enforced anymore. Unless your throwing around 10k watts on a base or something, the FCC doesn't care much.
Just my little well tuned system talks great in a 10 mile radius or so, just fine for trails/ highway. Way better off trail too then line of sight FM units like FRS/GMRS. If you guys want privacy and the audio quality of FM, MURS radio is starting to pick up. Its a little pricy, but no need for FCC licensing. This is my second hobby besides trail riding. I do hope to get my amateur license someday, but got too much going on right now.
