Interesting stuff.

I found this
Quote
The lubricant specified for this trans is API GL-4 or GL-5. Because of the paper-lined synchro rings, a friction modifier should be added to the lube fill. One bottle of friction modifier, Mitsubishi part #ME581050, should ensure smooth shifts.

Good read.

TSB on this,,,do not use GL5,,,sulfer in it eats you copper/bronze synchros.

Good point... Edited version

The lubricant specified for this trans is API GL-4 ( TSB update). Some synthetic gear lubes meet GL4 and GL5 requirments and are not corrosive to brass synchro rings. In these instances a GL5 lubricant can be used.

Because of the paper-lined synchro rings, a friction modifier should be added to the lube fill. One bottle of friction modifier, Mitsubishi part #ME581050, should ensure smooth shifts.

Thats my edit

I would be very curious to see how well the additive works.

On the additive , I read the TSB on Alldatapro at the P. Library. I can't remember for sure but I think it being for all V5MT1-1 thru 1-3.
I ran all GM synchro for 5 years. Then GL5 w "equatorc"(sp) for a year, yikes!
Very recently : 2 quarts RedLine syn. 79-80,,,1/2 quart Pennzoil synchromesh,,,1 pint stalube 80-90 GL4.
My trans is the first really bad one, truck built in 88. It has white paint on the fill plug , which means it went in on the semi recall and had that kit they used for mine . They have another kit for the 90-90.

It seem real thin,,,when I grind the gears there sharp clash noise. It shift better when I've had a dose of cafine. Still slow on 1 to 2nd, I usually shift slow , and click it to 3rd without releasing clutch ,,then to 2nd. Works real smooth that way.

Eeak! Glad I don't have either the 1 or the 3. I remember Lloyd telling stories years ago about the old V5MT1s. Some of it wasn't very pretty.

Mine behaved the same. I had to clutch, wait a few seconds, shift into 2nd, clutch, wait a few seconds and then shift into 3rd. Not quite as many seconds going to 3rd as 2nd but still I had to wait. It would grind going into second almost every time unless it was under 2K RPMs. Backwards was a completely different story. Going from 3rd to second was impossible unless you were barely moving. No grinding - it just wouldn't shift down.

Now, the shifting seems to be back to normal - pre-my being a complete duffus and putting GL5 in two transmissions and one t-case.

I made a quick stop at the dealership and had them bleed the clutch. We're in the midst of moving offices and don't have any time left this month to deal with truck things. Besides, they owed me a freebie. Anyway, that helped. It was maybe 70% back to normal. That kicked it up another 25%. The dribble method, BTW, doesn't work as well on the clutch as it does on brakes. The recommended two person method works a lot better.

I've asked but I've never seen what the manufacture uses. I know when I drained mine and my X's originally it was like water. Really, REALLY thin.

These trans remind me of the old school buses. Big HD trans with large jump to 2nd. I kinda exspect slowness there. Also to clarify , I don't shift into 3rd, just push in alittle so the synchros touch, then to 2nd.
I think GL5 is good for the rear end and is OK to use in the MT transfer case. No brass in there,,,I hope.

Yea, I should be use to this after 12 years but I've driven M21/22s and my current T10 for ever and I'm spoiled.

No, you absolutely do NOT want to use GL5 in the t-cases. The t-case has syncros and GL5 will do exactly the same thing as it does to the transmission. (At least our) shift-on-the-fly transfer cases have synchronizers. I have a good example of what happens sitting on my garage floor. When I drained the oil in March in prep for installing the NP231 conversion it came out gold. It looked like someone poured gold paint in the t-case instead of oil.

This article incorrectly states that GL4 or GL5 can be used in the V5MT1 transmission.
V5MT1: MitsubishiÆs Truck Transmission

According to all the shops I've talked to in the last 3-4 months, the dealership techs, and what I've been able to find in print - under no circumstances is GL5 rated gear oil to be run in the V5MT1-1,3 or 6 and it isn't supposed to be run in ANY of the pre-1999 shift-on-the-fly transfer cases. I didn't check anything post '99.

What about my ancient all manual t case???Brass in there???
Pretty sure GL5 for the transfer case is what the FSM says, I'll check again,,, I don't think there are any kind of synchros in there.
