WTF - Smoke after turning on fog lights #943058 05/01/09 01:17 AM

Turned on my Hella 550 fog lights the other night just to check if they were working. White smoke came out of my steering column. Popped the toyota fog light switch out and it looked fine. Do not see any damage anywhere underneath the dash or hood. Haven't checked the fuses yet. Don't know what to do. Any help greatly appreciated.

So, the circuit is still closed, or did it open up? Also, did it smoke the whol time or only for a duration? Did the smoke have an odor?

The stock wiring maybe to small for the lights. Did you use the stock wiring to trigger a relay or did you go directly to the lights?

Tell us EXACTLY how you have it wired.

It only smoked very white smoke for a minute. I guess there was an odor but I don't really recall. Everything else is working fine so far. Unfortunately I had somebody else put them in. Looks kinda like the switch is attached to factory wiring. Did 1988 runners come with factory wiring for fog lights under the pop out in the dash? Pulled the switch out and it looks ok. Should I order new wires and a new switch? Do fuses smoke?

Never heard of factory fog lights on a 1st gen.

NOTHING should smoke.

You NEED a relay.

Most fog light kits come with a relay.

You can buy a fog light relay kit that includes wiring, replay, and switch for cheap, or you can put the parts together yourself.

The kit included the wires and if I remember correctly a relay as well. The lights were fine for a couple of years. Don't know why this would happen now.

You can't let the smoke out. It is too hard to put back in...

I would look to see if the wires were rubbing against metal and chafed through the insulation. Look around before running the lights again. You don't want to lose all the smoke!
