Always loved this car since my college days.. seeing a few well heeled college students driving these and atractting women of the day like... ummm.. I won't use any analogies...

For those that have read about the Toyota 2000GT and, what became the 5M, 7M series of DOHC inline-6 engines, well Toyota was inspired to do this car and engine series from the Jaguar XKE from articles I've read.

Never did fulfill the fantasy on this car, but did buy a 5M powered Toyota.. loved that engine!

The Toyota 2000GT is prominently featured in the Bond Movie "You Only Live Twice" and is truly gorgeous. I've seen two up close and in person. Didn't capture the sound of the English big6's, but did well anyway.

Chris, at least you redneck restoration didn't use a Chevy 292...

I decided to get serious about this car.

She sure is pretty but she needs some love in the mechanical department so here I go.

Awesome Jag, but what is Pete Rose doing under the hood in the last picture?

Those Toyota 2000GTs are dang rare. I had forgotten about that car being in the Bond movie. I guess they asked Jaguar if they could use the XKE in one of the movies and Jaguar declined, they then asked Aston Martin.

Rich, It has been said i look like many people. Benny Hill, Meatloaf(when I had long hair), even the black comedian Sinbad ( ) but Pete Rose is a new one.

I was always curious about servicing the rear brakes of these cars. Are they a PITA to work on?

Body Damage is Cool
I have owned a few Alfa Romeos that had inboard rear brakes (DeDion rear ends) and yes the brakes are a pain. My brother had three of those Jags, one two seater and two 2+2 versions. If your heater fan needs replacing, find one off a Ford Pinto, it drops right in.

Roll Me Over
There was a Saudi prince at UC Santa Barbara in the last half of the sixties who had 6 XKEs and a Aston Martin. I met him a couple of times when we were in the same class. Evidently he used to loan the E-types out to friends until one wrapped it around a tree.

As I remember, one of the reasons that they opened up the nose in the later years was to help increase airflow for cooling as they always had overheating problems, even when new.

Yes the inboard brakes are a PITA to service. I was cursing just the other day about that. Luckily the calipers have been re-sleeved and function perfectly so I did'nt have to pull them. I focused mainly on the masters, plumbing, and resovoirs. when I went to bleed the rears I could barely get a wrench on the zirk let alone actuate it for bleeding. I had to do the ole attach a hose to the zirk and submerge it in brake fluid method.

Here is a shot of the rear showing the the disc. The overspray on the suspension kills me. I dont know what we were thinking letting that fly. My excuse is I was 13.

As Russell pointed out I do make use of my firewood while wrenching on the Jag.

Might be harder locating a Pinto anymore.

My pops used to say Jags only like to run fast in crappy weather. Driving slow on a warm day will kill this car quick. I plan on getting redundant on the cooling though. Double fans with a more efficient radiator. Either re-core this one or get an aluminum aftermarket one that bolts right in. Folks that have done this report zero overheating problems.
