We've been shopping for a trailer, but it would be good to know what the actual tow rating is for the 2.5TD LWB. Anyone know?

I'm a huge fan of ultra light weight units, but I made the mistake of bringing the wife shopping. She likes the idea of a bathroom and shower...

According to the POCUK website, towing capacity is 3300kg. We own a a 2006 Palomino Stampede SS238 hybrid weighing approx. 5000 lbs loaded up. Have towed with a 2.5 Pajero, 3.1 Isuzu Bighorn and a 4.2 Landcruiser. Going down highway 16 towards Jasper from Edmonton Pajero could hold 100-110km/hr on the flat easily once going, hills slowed things quite a bit. Isuzu did quite a bit better on the hills but also included meth. injection, air intake tweaked pump. Surprisingly Landcruiser wasn't much better than Bighorn. Going to use the Landcruiser this year though, going to try the meth injection and maybe get the exhaust done, a few tweaks here and there. Paj. could cope with about 4000lbs quite easily on the flat, just doesn't have the grunt for the hills at speed limit.

Thanks! That's more than I thought actually, and it's good to hear from someone's experience. 5000lbs is a lot bigger than I've been looking at, but it's good to know it can be done. I could be flatlanding it all the way to Ontario this summer. We'll see.

Tongue weight anyone?

Ed, you're welcome to come over and give mine a test tow. Its around 2000# or so, empty. Personally, I wouldn't go that much with the 2.5L if you're going into BC's mountains. Around here it'd probably be okay...

Tongue? Not positive on yours, but I've seen ratings of 600# in some markets with the right hitch, for my truck. What hitch do you have?

A properly set up weight distribution hitch really helps out all these vehicles on tongue weight. In reality towing 2000lbs is nothing around here in Alberta, look back 15-20 years ago at the power any Ford, Chev., Dodge truck made, really not at that impressive, look at what they would tow with them. If your not in a big panic to get anywhere cruising at even 90km/hr should not be a big problem in a 2.5 Pajero. Don't strictly purchase a trailer because it may be 500lbs lighter than another one, buy something you will be happy with. Any one that has towed alot of travel trailers will probably tell you there is not much difference between 3000lbs and 4000lbs. in a vehicle like these around here on the flat. The mountains yes, but we may see the mountains maybe once a year.

I'm trying to stay as lightweight as possible because I think it keeps a lot of options open. I don't want to max it out, I just want to know what range I should be shopping in.

My hitch is the one it came with from Japan. A large angled plate bolts behind the loop and has the hole for the hitch ball - no receiver. But, then there is a piece of tube that connects this out to the frame. It looks strong, but looks to have been bent at some point.

Most of my travels at first will be to Saskatchewan and through Crowsnest Pass to Cranbrook, then South to the USA. There are some good hills there.

I would definatly get a proper class 3 or 4 hitch. I was told when I used my pajero it was illegal to tow a travel trailer using the factory 4 point NATO receiver, but a utility trailer was OK. At the time this was confirmed by my insurance company that a proper North American frame mounted hitch must be used. Had to mod. the tailpipe for the montero hitch to fit. I would definatly check this out before hand to save youself a bunch of grief.

If you plan to travel in the mountains I would try and stay as light as possible.

I just had a look and I was wrong about the frame tie-in. That's just to support the rear step! The hitch is just on that L bracket.

Would the 3000kg rating work for the SWB?

I just wanted to throw in there that I threw over 1200lbs of concrete in the cargo area and it made no difference to going up the hills at the 80km speed limit to my house.

I love my truck!

Oh yeah, and I read online that the tow rating was 5500lbs with beefier springs tied into the rear. This was for a long wheel base. I can't remember which site it was but it was an aussy site that I came across looking for OME springs. Not that Iwould ever tow that, it would be a slow trip.
