I bought a pajero for cheap

My New Pajero

Then figured its got a rod knock. More than likely a gudgeon pin

Rod knock causes

So the tear down has begun

Will strip down till just the block and heads are left and then take it out and send it in for a slightly bigger bore, head skim and new pistons, bearings and head refresh.

Any pointers to look out for will be greatly appreciated as I am not familiar with these engines - usually work on my VW 8 valve engine.

PICS

Belts hoses fan and radiator. Radiator will get a 3 row recore.

Cam belt looks pretty good surprisingly

NOTE TO SELF : Replace ALL water hoses

You may check out the link on Frank's supercharger project for some good rebuild techniques. The one I remember that seemed really important is to check the clamping range on the head bolts. There seem to be a lot of failed head gaskets due to improper torquing. Get a bottoming tap and chase all the head bolt holes in the block to make sure the threads go as far down as possible. Then install the bolts and measure how much clamping range they have. Compare this to the thickness of the head and gasket combination. Shorten the head bolts as required to make sure the bolts don't bottom out, thus giving a false torque reading.

i am curious how much it will all cost.

just recently did mine except for the bottom end...still ran close to $1000 after motor mounts , gaskets , head shaving , welding etc...

But was worth every penny! The GR is Transformed!

I'm probably looking at about $500 in parts and $500 in labour as I'm having the block with heads sent in to have it professionally bored, skimmed and assembled along with the head refresh.

The block will hot tanked so Im not worried about false torque range. Also - I'm not doing that part of assembly. Thanks for the inpu though <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Hot tanking WILL NOT clean the thread on the head. But, don't take my word for it...

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Had the folks over for coffee last night so didn't get a lot done.

I got the A/C bracket off as well as the fan pulley bracket. Got rid of lower cambelt bracket.

Hoping to get rid of the rest of the loose connections tonight and the PS pump.

Hopefully start on the outlet manifolds (have sprayed them) - any tips on whether i should take em off or just disconnect at the downpipe and leave the manifold for the workshop?

Also, over the weekend trying to get to the bellhousing. Any tips there? drop engine or whatever?
