I'm assuming they are going to rebuild the rods? Most times the big ends need to be re honed.

the pistons are replaced as a whole with new tops, pins, rings, rods, and bearings ( oversized for the cut crank )

I thought you were not supposed to turn these cranks due to the the nitride or some other such hardening proceedure??

There was a TSB that stated the crankshaft should not be ground undersize due to the undercut fillet radius. One machinist told me he saw no reason why it couldn't be reground and the fillet restored. OTOH, from what I have heard (but don't know for certain), the hardening isn't so deep on these crankshafts.

All things considered, I probably wouldn't regrind the crankshaft - unless I had it re-treated.

BUT - if the machinist has done it before with good results, I would let him try it - so long as he wanted to stand behind the work..... including the cost of R&R + rebuilding the engine if the crankshaft fails.

thanks for the pointer. Do you perhaps have the mentioned TSB?

I would like to just mention it to the machinist and see what he says. He has been around for a long time and has a really good reputation here and said he has worked on many of these engines. He might have an interesting point with regards to these cranks. I will report back when I have spoken to him.

I'll look it up when I get home tonight and post the number, date and information. If you like, PM your email address to me and I'll send the factory TSB.pdf file via email to you.

I don't doubt that it can be ground - I just don't know what happens if you do. My own machinist was puzzled by what seemed straightforward to him, but nevertheless, the warning is there from Mitsubishi. It could be that the engineers were concerned about the quality of machining in some parts of the world where Mitsubishis are sold, but if so, you'd think they would instead warn the machinist to make certain he restored the undercut fillet radius and if he could not, then the crankshaft should not be reground.

I'd be very interested in your machinist's experience with grinding them.

Frank

My guess would be itÆs a cast iron crank with a rolled fillet. The factory is concerned that grinding the journal will disturb the fillet.

You can buy that crank re manf with undersized journals. In most cases it works, it just may not have the same fatigue life as the original part.

Typicly cast iron cranks are not factory hardened.
