Small progress.

Engine will be back in two weeks.

In the meantime I've chased all the wires from the speakers as only the rear right was working.

All 4 speakers are working now and the wiring ball sorted behind the radio.

Did you open it to check the

* brushes
* bearings/bushes

?

Was planning on doing it later but .... procrastination is not the way to go with a rebuild

Opened up and it looks good. No excessive wear after 257'000km

* I think mitsubishi engineers should get noble prizes for their simple robust designs
* I have yet to encounter a part on the pajero that is not easy to understand, take apart and/or service ( compared to the jetta where most things are a pain )

I would re-think putting grease on the sides of the brushes. Any contamination to the commutator will reduce the motors output.

Once brushes are contaminated with oil (thatÆs what is in the grease) it cant be removed.

What is on the sides will migrate.

Thanks Kevin

I'll strip again and clean - I haven't used the starter yet so I should be OK.

Neither of those bolts look like what I call the "crank bolt" and as it looks from my 95. Mine has the long neck tha come though the balancer.

Here a link to a past thread that has pics of the old bad on and the new one the recall replaces with. (My 95 had the new as it was post-recall.)

That was my initial thought as well but reading that thread this post makes me wonder ..... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I recently ordered a Crank bolt from ..parts.com (i think) Korum Mitsu in WA. The improved bolt has been superceded by what looks like a hardened vertion of the caravan bolt.

It's short but installs just fine with a standard 6" extention.

FastEddy...... is there any way you could post a pic of this washer?

The washer should be a belleville type, with a slight dome which goes toward the bolt head. This puts a "spring" tension on the pulley at proper torque.
