So my friend had a k&n cone air filter sitting around in the garage and we decided to see if it would improve the HP at all. It did't seem to make a difference. I was just wondering... is there any point to upgrading the intake if the exhaust is still stock? Or does the intake even need an aftermarket filter at all?

No and no.
The only reason I went to a K&N replacement is because I can't get OEM paper filters easily.

cool thanks, looks like the old filter is goin back in... its waaay quieter. the k&n sounds like the space shuttle (but not when its taking off, when the workers are using their power tools on it, which is still loud).

Diesels suck way more air than a gas engine (of the same displacement.) That's why the airbox/filter is so huge. The one on the Pajero is more than big enough for our little 105hp 4-banger. As I said, I do have a K&N replacement filter in my airbox, but that's for the reuseability.
A bigger exhaust is supposed to help, according to "seat of the pants" reports on here. No hard dyno numbers yet. I can fully believe it helps the turbo spool up a little faster and may even keep the EGTs down.

Yeah I'm lookin into gettin a 3" s/s exhaust. maybe take some 3" tube to my cousin who works in a stainless shop and see what he can do. Otherwise, my mechanic says it could be around 1300 bucks to order it from japan or get it custom done from someone else. If I ever actually do it, I'll let you know how it goes.

People on here who know more than I do have gone with a 2.5" and said any more is a waste. You may even have routing issues. Just search exhaust and you will find a few threads.

If you are in Calgary. Go to Calgary Muffler at Macleod and 58th. Speak with Al. My exhaust was $350.

The exhaust is a pretty simple thing to make under a Pajero. It's basicly a very easy downpipe, a straight pipe and a kink over the rear axle that has a little angle to the right to get it hanging under the framerail and away from the coil. This is done to almost every beefed up diesel truck in my neck of the woods and compared to a pickup toy or a GQ Patrol this is quick and easy and as a result cheap. I found some extra horses when I did this and they only wake up when I go uphill in high gears. Hills that demanded me to shift from 5th to 4th suddenly were doable in 5th. Puting a 3" on an engine this size is probably more of a personal choice than perfomance gain over the 2.5" and also the 3" can not be bent over the rear axle without a kink unless it's mandrel bent.
2.5" and a single resonator with a down facing end tip, can't go wrong with it and your'e set for future turbo mod's. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

cool. yeah im not interested in having a big exhaust for show... strictly for performance. so if a 2.5¿ does the same as the 3¿, 2.5 is good for me. but i live in the vancouver area, so calgary is a little outa my way for an exhaust upgrade.
