Thank you all for the help! Axe Man I checked again and all I have is battery voltage at the 2 wires for the coil connector. I pulled the ECM and was able to count over 52 pins and found what I assume to be the correct wire on the ECM plug because it did have continuity. The only thing is the wire is not yellow at the coil plug it is green. And this green wire has continuity to a spot counting 52 over at the ECM plug. If this sounds correct my next step is finding a new ECM. On a earlier post reference was made to ECM numbers. Will all 97 5 speed Sportages have the same number?

Something is not making sense. I have the engine electrical schematics for 1996-1997 as well as the electrical manual for 1998-2000 and neither show a green wire to the coils.

Send me an e-mail at mjats@juno.com and I'll forward you the 1996-1997 data. Use that to verify the coil wiring back to the ECM.

What a morning. I found a ECM locally so I picked it up and nothing changed. Because I have everything assembled with coil cover off I have access to the coil plug.( I'm sure the test I going to describe is not in the book ,lol.) I took a spare coil and plugged it in resting on the valve cover with a plug and started engine. The plug fired off as it should so at this point it looks like a fuel problem. I pulled the intake manifold and found the injectors for 2&3 packed with sediment so this is has to be the problem. Now I can see a light at the end of this tunnel but this bring up a few questions. This truck sat for a year or so before we found it. It had a 1/4 tank of bad sediment full gas that I removed and replaced with fresh fuel. Once the truck hit the road it has been fine for months and all of a sudden this happens. I did ask her friend how low she ran it and she said low so this could explain it plugging up injector passages. I plan on replacing the fuel filter and cleaning everything as I go. Is the (vent?) hose on the injector replaceable with regular fuel hose or is it specific to the injector as one has a crack? Any input or advice on the fuel system is appreciated. Axe Man I will send you that e-mail. Thanks again for all your help!

Haven't seen the e-mail yet but as soon as I do I'll forward you the info.

If you are talking about the rubber hose to the pressure regulator then you can replace it with typical rubber hose. That line frequently cracks but it carries no pressure so standard rubber line, such as type used for vacuum lines, can be used. If it's any of the high pressure fuel lines the thickness of the line will be obvious and you'll need lines rated for fuel injection service.

Yes, replace the fuel filter. I would also suggest pulling the entire fuel rail and getting the injectors cleaned and flow tested. Sounds like you have the problem narrowed down.

First I like to thank everyone involved in Kia forum for being so helpful. I have been a member for a while now and this is the first time I comment on anything, reading the post I just had to get involved because the same thing happen to me, I just got a 96 kia sportage from a neighbor which has been sitting for about 2 years, I got it started finally and it was running ok... but then started to shake and no power, well long story short check your fuel tank mine was full of rust and the sediment in the bottom was unbelievable the fuel pump went bad and I had two clogged injectors same computer codes, cyl 1 and 3 on mine, took everything apart cleaned the injectors replaced the FUEL TANK (special order $197.00 in Puerto Rico) blew some air in all the fuel lines and new fuel filter and now I just can't believe the power that this little engines have is running like new. Well hope this helps and thanks to everyone on the forum for being so helpful.

Just one final update to close this out. I sourced a good gas tank as the one in the truck was full of rusty sediment. I had fuel injectors cleaned, cleaned fuel rail, blew out both fuel lines, and cleaned fuel pump and screen. All I can say is WOW! This thing runs 125% BETTER. As for the green wire going to the 2&3 coil, this is just in the coil sub harness. The coil wire is yellow on the harness before the coil harness. The guy at the dealer said the coil sub harness had been updated so that might explain the wire color discrepancies. Thanks to all and I hope this thread might help someone in the feature
