Exactly like the battery cable was disconnected, by corrosion. Some knocking around made enough connection that it would work, for a while, then the advancing corrosion breaks the contact again. Cleaning the posts and terminals should cure it...

It's not the starter, because all the other electrical stuff quit, so the failure point is the terminal/battery.
