you'll be really lucky if it is for the 7.5", most likely its for the 8" because those are more common covering more years. If this is the case you could do the v6 front diff swap. But this is good news either way

A week or so ago I contacted "Aussie Lockers" (www.aussielockers.com)to see if they could supply a unit for a friend's 1987 4 cylinder Gen 1 24 spline front diff. here's my question:

"I would like to know if you can supply a unit for a Mitsubishi Montero. It is for the front diff. I'm hoping you might as this vehicle is popular in Australia, it is called the Pajaro there. I need one for a 1987 model with a 2.6l 4 cylinder. The spline count is 24 on the shafts. I think it has a 7.5" ring gear dia."

Here's their reply:

"We have a front Montero locker we just brought into our stock in the USA. We have not yet completed the market information to enable us to add this to our product line so we are not sure if it is what you need or not. We will try to make this happen later this week and get back to you."

I'm pretty sure they are the US distributor for the "Lokka"
I haven't heard back yet, I'll follow up when I do.

Do they make one for the rear of the 1987 monty?
Does anyone know what the diff size and spline size is?

Not sure about the spline count, but I am pretty sure up to 88 we had the 8" rear end. It wasn't till 89 that got the 9" rear end. And I thought the front was 7.25" up until 89 when they put the 8" in.....maybe I am wrong...

So I see mention of the LockRite and the Aussie Locker. Is one better than the other. Does anyone know the pro's\con's of these two?

you don't want one in the rear and it's cheaper and more of an upgrade to swap the sport rear end in.

Why wouldn't he "want one in the rear"? Sure it may be "more of an upgrade" to do something else, but what if the "something else" isn't available to him? If he were running big output numbers at the rear wheels, then sure I'd say a ratcheting locker may not be the best choice, but out of a 2.6? Over an open differential and in the absence of other options, I can't say that I agree. Reasons why having a lockrite back there would be useful since we aren't all so smart.

Just my .02...

Sport diff gets you monster axle size, disk brakes, factory locker... etc. All for junkyard prices.

I agree, no contest...but you missed my point about availability. We don't all have access to these parts and have to do what we can do. That's all I'm trying to say.

I'm trying to follow along, but think I got lost. I know what a lockrite is (had one in my YJ) and i know about the montero sport axel swap(via this site), but if i'm reading this thread right, the sport axel swap is the aussie locker? Note, my goal in the end is to have rear disk brakes and have an "on road" friendly locker in the rear which is why this thread is very interesting to me. I don't plan on doing much adding of power. I'm ok with going slow:)
