You want to weld the spider gears together, and not the housing. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

The housing should already be welded together<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />...just don't weld to the carrier to the diff <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Too bad the front diffs do not have carriers. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

Link for you

Whatever you say... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> Still has a carrier to me.

I can understand why your confused... The factory manual calls the casting that the ring gear and carrier are put into the differential case.

Thats on the front diff....

Straight out of the 87 Montero manual.

Right.. Because parts store employees are the authority on automotive terminology. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

You would ask for differential case bearings, and they would likely produce them.

Being a former counter jocky at a parts store, I was able to interpret what they wanted if they asked for one and meant the other. I also was never a prick and said NO YOUR LOOKING FOR A CASE BEARING! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Good man. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> I'm guilty as to always call them a carrier bearing also. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I know the the actual carrier bearing is what connects 2 driveshafts together like on a Chevy. I don't know that much about the inside of the diff either..

EDIT- I typed in differential case bearings on Autozones website and it says We're sorry, but there are no results in this parts category for your 1989 Mitsubishi Truck Montero 4WD 2.6L 2BL 4cyl. Same for Advance Auto. Guess they call them something else.

If you are gonna weld it (whatever way) please have it balanced as an unbalanced diff (due to the welds) will destroy your seals very quickly and give vibrations.

Everyone has different names for rearend parts. I have always called the part the ring gear bolts to a carrier, but I know that chrysler calls it a case in some of their books. Still, I have never had a problem getting carrier bearings for anything.

I don't see why this is funny. If you have ever felt what a couple of grams can do to your tires when they aren't balanced then just imagine what the weight of that welds will do to the turning parts in your diff.

Or have I got my stuff all mixed up?
