Will a 6G72, 3.0 liter Mitsubishi engine from a 2-wheel drive 1998 Montero Sport fit directly into a 1991 LWB Montero? Is this a direct fit and an easy swap? If you gurus tell me this is easy, then I've found an engine for the 1991 LWB (rod knock) I rescued from the junkyard a few weeks ago.

The short answer is "No".

The long answer is that it can be made to work, but you'll need parts from the Gen1 engine - like the oil pan and some other top end parts, sensors, etc.

You'll also have to figure out how to manage the engine as a 98 3.0 will be a 24 valve, disributerless setup. So your looking at swapping in the 98 ECM. Exhaust will need to be figured out as well.

Thanks, guys. It makes perfect sense . . . there would be a world of difference between a 1991 that has a carburetor, and a 1998 with electronic ignition. The 1998 also probably has fuel injection. The 1998 engine showed up on my radar via the 4x4wire. I suppose if I had seen it I would have recognized it would not be a direct transplant.

The '91 is EFI - not carbureted, but there's still a world of difference in the rest of the engine.

Yes, the 1991 is EFI. Two things I've learned from the 4x4wire - humility, and the importance of holding onto my day job!

If you go on with the swap, please document it. I'd like to do a 12V to 24V 3.0 swap.
