Getting the Wheeling Fever
1994 T100 120,000 miles

My left front caliper has 1 piston which is fused. So it's time for some work.

The rotors are also in bad shape after 15 years. There are many rotors out there. I was wondering if there was any benefit to getting a more expansive rotor or is a basic OEM type part good enough? I am not really into all the high end performance stuff, just solid parts.

Was also wondering what is involved in getting the rotor off with the T100 4WD setup.

I did the front brake rebuild a few years ago and have been quite happy using Brembo rotors, OEM type (no slotting, drilling or cyro treatment). Can't remember specifically, but I think they were $60ish per side, though that was a few years ago.

As for the rebuild, it certainly isn't as simple as pulling off the old and putting on the new. You will be rebuilding the bearings in the process. Basically take a 54mm hub sockets, pull off the hub, clean the bearings, repack the bearings, pull of the rotor, put on a new rotor, put back on spindle, tighted to appropriate specs and replace calipers.

Come to think of it, there is a nice write up for this on this site: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/front_end/.

On the flip side, about a year ago I went to drilled, slotted rotors found on eBay that included pads. Replaced bearings and calipers as well and the truck stops on a dime with a load on. Will try to find the rotors name as I am VERY impressed with hot stopping ability. Got some hills here.

Bedtime for old farts here but I checked with eBay. Look at ebay item number 270395973471. This is the company I used and I am extremely happy with the cost / results ratio. Pads are just right, not noisy or prone to heating up or wet conditions like some ceramics or cheap aftermarket stuff. As to the rotors, been on for about a year and still no sign of rust on them . And I live in salt land. Best buy in my opinion.

+1 on the Brembo + Hawk! Real good bang for buck here.

Sounds straight forward enough. I knew I was going to need to inspect and repack bearings, seals etc.

One other thing. I live in the mountains of Utah. Snow and salt on the roads from Oct - May. Almost every year the hand brake machenics in the hub area always rust up and then the rear shoes don't retract. Every spring I need to brake them loose again. The first time it took hours to get the hubs off and 1 can of PB blaster to get everyting free. It really helps to keep that stuff oiled up. I always coat the the axil end and inside of the hub with and anti-seize compound. It's a big help.

Thanks everyone.

Body Damage is Cool
Pad make a major difference in how a rig stops. Rotor type may make a difference in how well it keeps stopping, under repeated hard applications.

I've seen nothing about the oem stock rotors that would give me pause to reusing that type. Only if I were hauling horse trailers in the mountains of Tennessee or such would I consider a rotor upgrade.
