Gas is over a year old

Get rid of that. I wouldn't run that through my lawn mower

Gas is over a year old, and I have a massive fuel leak pre filter so its not very fresh gas either.

Oh mark, what is a DRBII?

You probably want to start here. This is the factory diagnostic manual. Read the section on drivability tests.

http://www.mitsubishilinks.com/fsm/raider_fsm_1989_powertraindiagnostics-30l.pdf

A DRB-II is the factory diagnostic tool. With it you can...
 • check the injector circuits
 • check the o2 sensor
 • check the engine temp sensor
 • check the air flow sensor sensor
 • check the engine rpm
 • check the air temp sensor
 • check throttle position sensor
 • check the crank angle circuit
 • check the air pressure sensor
 • check the fuel pump circuit
 • check the EGR temp circuit

I was looking under the Montero where I saw the fuel leak which went from bad to horrible. I never knew a fuel line sheds its skin . What was left was a spongy mess of rust . I bought some injector hose and new 5/16thmetal line and replaced the 3 foot section of bad. I have to say it smoothed everything out quite a bit. Still ran like crap but I swapped Mass air sensors from a spare intake and it smoothed the whole thing out a great deal. I still have a check engine light and some shaking but its almost night and day compared to how bad it was. I still have to dump the old fuel before I can really see a difference I think.

Sorry about the delay in getting the DRB-II on it's way. It is all boxed up and ready. I just need time to get it to the post office when they are open. I'm in a LP Fire Control class this weekend. I should have it on the way on Monday morning.

Thanks for offering me the DRBII Mark. I am not sure if I need it anymore though. I was fiddling with the Montero and tore the intake down and reseated the fuel rail. After about 3 minutes of running the Check Engine light blinked off and the engine smoothed out. Still shakes a bit, but its almost like it should be running. I still have the shaking to deal with, and a mystery coolent leak has shown itself. Also a few corrosion gremlins are needed to be dealt with. But aside from that its running like it should... I was wondering if the ECU on the 89 Montero had a memory on it that would store an error code and keep it running poorly for a while after solving the problem?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
i have to replace fuel lines pretty often on both of our motorhomes' generators. cures the rough idling and shaking just about every time. i didn't even think about that for your problem. it might help me with my own little raider's rough idling a bit, as i've got a separate thread about that here somewhere. i'll go check it now. jack b :-)

I would try replacing the fuel filter before replacing the lines. This truck sat for over a year with road salt on it from the poconos. My 89Raider still has clean rust free lines because I wash the underside once a month.
