Hey guys with lift kits. Ya know, there was an old racer who got traction on dirt and asphalt tracks by taking his Ford rear end and flipping it upside down so as to get the bite on the outside of the car on the passenger side - before affordable posi. In so doing he also ended up with a reduced drive shaft angle as the pumpkin was upside down. Did not make a difference with the oil in the carrier as it was enough under running conditions to make it a non issue. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo. wanna make a little difference in the angle of your drive shaft? Flip the rear end. Sure, you will have to reroute the brake lines and diddle with the parking brake, but you will be doing that anyway. Hmmmmm. Hey EB, whadaya think??
PS. Racer's name was A. J. Foyt.

PS. Racer's name was A. J. Foyt. Minor problem is that you end up with 5 reverse gears and one forward gear in doing so. Would also need to do the same in front or you would have the front wheels pulling forward and the rear ones pulling backwards!

Flipping the diff 180 degrees doesn't change the direction of rotation as far as I can see. Or am I missing something here? Dave

Dave Flipping the diff over puts the pinion gear on the other side of the ring gear. So now instead of the pinion gear rotating and pushing the ring gear teeth downward to roll the axle forward, after flipping the pinion will be pushing the ring gear teeth upward making the axle turn in reverse.

There's a lot more brains and experience out there than I would ever claim to have. On the other hand, I do know Foyt pulled it off. Not sure how as the old Hot Rod Magazine article is long gone. So, how did he do it? A boat motor with reverse rotation would work. Weakened old guy memory says that was it. Getting a reverse set of ring and pinion would work. I know for sure it worked. Believe Bill France caught him at it. Remember, the term banjo comes from the old style of rear unit manufacture where the carrier assembly as a separate unit. W/o the carrier and the cover the casting looked like a banjo. You could flip the carrier assy and axles and it would work - in reverse This would be fun to pursue. Sorry for the false lead though.
