anybody drill and tap their mitsubishi steering gearbox for an assist cylinder? pics?

i was thinking about getting the whole hydro assist kit from psc but the only gearbox they offer that looks close to a mitsu fit is for an EB and is $750, making the kit something like $1500. so i'll just be getting the ram and hoses for about $200, for now, and drill and tap my own gear.

Why would you need to tap into gearbox?
Just cut high pressure line in half, braze on standard hydraulic fittings, and you are set. That's how I connected my winch. My biggest concern would be whether pump produces enough flow. I would dare to say not.

pretty sure it doesn't work that way, you need a right and left high pressure port to work the dual acting cylinder, here's how it's done on other boxes.

I spoke to a company in Texas a while back. If I remember correctly it was West Texas Off Road. They said I could send them a Mitsu steering box and they'd rebuild it and tap it for around $450. Just to tap the box was less than half that.

Dannys correct. It's not possible to just 'tap into the lines'.

If you decide to tap your box please post the details. I've been tossing this around for the last 6-7 years. Be nice to drop to 8-9psi and still be able to turn the steering wheel at a stand still.

sent my box out to PSC motorsports(in texas)this morning. the total for the assist kit with the box rebuild was $850 before shipping. i'll post pics of where they tapped into it when i get it back, but they say it should be ported too, for the assist cylinder to work right.

Very cool! Looking forward to seeing the pics of the box!

How good is the return on you steering now? That was the only thing that anyone has ever mentioned about the conversion. Steering wheel doesn't return on its own. I'm curious if it doesn't return at all or not as well as it did before the conversion.
