Inexpensive, reliable source for EGR? #947983 06/03/09 11:47 PM

I've searched the web for an EGR for my truck and found a few relatively cheap on eBay, but I sort of worry about buying parts that way.

Anyone have any sources for an inexpensive EGR for a '98 Rodeo?

I suspect that the EGR is an Isuzu specific part, at least for your engine. You can try contacting Jerry LeMond by email or call St. Charles Automotive at 800-727-8066.

try the website http://www.car-part.com it searches all of the wrecking yards in all of north america. you can sort by how close it is to you, or by price, or by anything. take a look, sometimes you can find what you need for cheap.

It seems to be widely used on Chevy/GMC products.

Of course, that does not reduce the cost of a new one.

Are you sure you need one, or do you need to clean out the EGR passage in the intake? This seems to be a more common problem than the valve failing.

Good Luck,
Michael

Actually, I had the EGR off and cleaned it this last weekend. Are you saying that I should also clean the passage leading to it? If so, how would you recommend doing that? And talk to me like I'm stupid; I'm a novice mechanic.

As always, thanks for your time, guys. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

YOU MAY NOT HAVE A BAD EGR VLV , BUT ALL MOST GAURENTEE YOU HAVE PLUGGED DISCHARGE PORT FOR THE EGR , REMOVE THE THROTTLE BODY ON THE FRT OF THE ENG FOUR BOLTS HOLD IT TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD , LAY IT OVER OUT OF THE WAY, NOW LOOK DOWN IN THE OPENING RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MANIFOLD AND YOU WILL SEE A STEEL PIPE POINTING FORWARD IT SHOULD HAVE AN OPENING IN THE END OF ABOUT 3/8 IN OR BETTER THIS IS THE DISCHARGE FOR THE EGR VLV
CLEAN THE PACKED IN CARBON OUT AND THEN RUN A FLEX BORE BRUSH OR A SPEEDO CABLE ON A DRILL UP IN THE PIPE AND CLEAN IT OUT , IT WILL NORMALLY ONLY PLUG UP ABOUT 2IN IN, NOW REMOVE THE EGR VLV AT THE BACK OF TH ENG AND BLOW ALL THE LOOSE CRAP OUT BUT WATCH YOUR EYES , CARBON CAN AND WILL HURT IF IT HITS YOU NOW SPRAY ABOUT HALF A CAN OF BRAKE CLEANER DOWN THE TUBE AND WASH IT OUT , PACK SOME RAGS IN UNDER THE END OF THE TUBE AND CATCH AS MUCH OF THE JUNK AS YOU CAN , JERRY

Only use the isuzu part! The one that autozone sells will not last.
I purchased an isuzu egr from ebay from an isuzu dealer. It actually looked like an isuzu sticker was pasted over the top of a GM sticker. This egr has been in my trooper for 2 years now and the dreaded CEL has not come back. I tried 3 autozone units and the lasted about 6 months each.
My port was plugged when the OEM unit went out on me. I cleaned it up then and have kept it clean, so I know the autozone units were not failing due to plugged ports.

1987 trooper LS.'94 3.2, SAS,35's , lots of dents and rust. Now, improved, with more dents.
1995 trooper LS. Wife won't let me improve this one.
1996 trooper. I'll need something to modify when the '87 finally rusts away.

Thanks for the help, guys. I need to add this to today's to-do list, in addition to weeding, mowing, trimming, watering, etc.

Ok, this is frustrating. I have the throttle body off and I can look inside the intake manifold, but I can see nothing that looks like a small pipe leading to the EGR.

Any ideas?

Holy cow. I finally found the pipe, but it was so gummed up and encrusted with grease and dirt, it looked like a rod, not a pipe. I poked at it with a bore brush and had to shove through the gunk to get the brush up and in there.

The intake manifold is pretty nasty, too. Is it supposed to be that way?

And how much brake cleaner should I spray up in there? And for how long should I let it sit before I start it again?

And will it act funny until it burns the gunk out?

Again, thanks for your patience, guys.
