I have a 98 4 runner with a rear storage hatch door that's giving me some heartburn. It wasn't closed fully when last closed and it dosn't seem to want to close with quick pressure applied and the latch wont' release it. Goofy. Any way to unlatch it that I'm missing. I feel like an idiot on this one.

I have posted over on the monte section and am hoping for the same warm, patient spirit here.

Hmmm...never had that problem with my 4Runners.

No, there is no secret way to unlatch it.

Sounds stupid, but make SURE its unlocked. Hit the unlock a few times and try again.

If not, your only option will probably be to remove then panel and try to get at the latch from the inside, and pop it loose with a screwdriver.

Roll Me Over
Oooh, have fun with that. I had that issue, my key holder snapped and fell inside holding the locking mechanism from moving.
I had to crawl in the back, and genty pry out the weather stripping, then take out the strap screw, then pull off the cover (it's a PIA with the door closed).
Then i could get to the inside of the door to work on it.

Good luck!
Greg

Thanks for the advice. As I lay in bed last night thinking about taking apart the rear door and trim I thought about your suggestion to make sure the door was unlocked. It occurred to me that I hadn't had the assistance of someone to unlock the door while I put direct pressure on the latch to open the door. Well.......after my wife finally got up we tried that and voila.

Sweet to have outside input

Thanks, Charlie
