Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Hello guys... After some wheeling I notice that the IFS front suspension do not have enough travel to keep front tires on the floor so I am planing to get rid of the front IFS suspension and install a solid straight front differential.
One choice is a Dana 44 front differential from a XJ Jeep Cherokee.. with the same XJ suspension type (coils and control arms)
Also I would like to replace the rear OEM differential for the same XJ Cherokee rear Dana 44 differential but with coil and control arms suspension.
Any one of you have done this swap or something like that?.. any help and pictures will be appreciate....
Thanks.
JorgeA.

IIRC it's been done on a Gen I although I don't recall who's done it.
This has also been done on a Montero Sport (ES97Sport) and with other options can be $$$$$$.
All depends on if you're the fabricator or not how expensive it will be. Definitely doable though.

May want to check again. Pretty sure the Cheros all came with 30's which is a step backwards as far as durability goes. Even from IFS...
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

I don't think XJ's (Cherokee) or WJ (Grand Cherokee) ever came with a Dana44 front axle. They came with a Dana30 which is similar but has a smaller ring gear.
If you want a dana44 you'll need an early bronco version (driver side drop) and then install chevy outers to get the six bolt pattern.
Or some Jeep TJ's had the optional dana44 front axle but have unit bearings so you would need to convert the rear axle to match the bolt pattern.

Well there you go. You will be miles ahead since you are attaching the control arms to a frame instead of the unibody. I would replace the factory control arms with DOM tubing and johnny joints for great strength. Most people are using radius arms or leaf springs for their SAS cause it's easier.
Make sure you run a track bar that is set parallel to your drag link. I would do a simple 3 link + trac bar.

Coils front and rear will be more complicated - $$$ - than either a leaf/leaf or leaf/radius arm conversion.
My Sport - other than using Dana 44s - isn't really relevant. Mine's leaf rear/Ford radius arm front.
Other than make sure the front 44 is a HP and that the track bar and drag link is as close to parallel as possible that's it for me.

JorgeA. Damn, yet another short-changing of OEM options for the U.S.
