Can I get some advice on how to install the oil pan (gasket) so that it doesn't leak? I have removed/replaced my pan gasket on my 84 pickup about four times in the last 3 weeks and it still leaks. I have used of gasket, and sealer; gasket only; etc. Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like the bolts have been over tightened leaving dimples rather then a flat mounting surface.

make sure the pan is flat.

Use a ball peen hammer to flatten the dimples. Put the mounting surface on the edge of a table and hammer them flat.

Take a small block of steel that will fit in the lip on the outside of the pan and a small hammer and tap all of the bolt holes flat from the top of the pan. Throw the gasket away (they did not come with one from the factory) and go to Toyota and buy a tube of black FIPG and use that. The tube will run you 25-30 dollars but it is good stuff. Run about an 1/8 inch bead on all the mateing surfaces on the pan. Bolt up but do not overtighten the bolts, FSM call for 9 ft lbs.

Actually the 1984 did come with a gasket (a nice one that was rubber impregnated). The best advice is to assemble it with the sealant and only tighten enough for all surfaces to make contact. Then WAIT, as in do it Friday night and don't fill it or fire it until Sunday. Then after the sealant is totally cured you can snug it down and fill it.

Good Luck.

And, make sure the pan and block surfaces are clean before applying the goop.

Are you sure it's the pan that is leaking? Front or rear main seal and oil pressure sender leaks can look a lot like oil pan leaks.

never one to be with the "croud" ..... after so many replacements I would have to ask myself "are you sure it's the O/Pan gasket leaking ?"

could it be maybe the o/pump o ring ? or rear seal ? or something else ?
