Body Damage is Cool
Not just for Jeeps.

I've noticed my mileage slipping down to low teens and tried several tricks to bring it back up to the 20 it had when I bought it..

Easy, soft driving went up from 14 to 15.5, eh not much fun.

45 psi in tires, well up to 16 mpg but ride sucks and MTs howl.
Back down to 30 psi.

Last trick seems to be working. Im up to 18 in the city and WOO HOO got 22 mpg on a trip to the coast.

Removed the following;

Folding back seat -100 lbs
3 piece fiberglass top -200 lbs
Spare tire & mount -100 lbs
Carpet and hi-Lift -30 lbs
Trunk box full of recovery chain, snow chains, salt and 2x 4 ton come-alongs -200 lbs

So as you'd expect. 0 to 60 is much faster, braking distance is much shorter, less roll in corners and overall a real pleasure to drive again.

Granted much of this is stuff I'll need at some point.
But the daily commute to work is a bit more fun and I'm getting a nice forhead and left arm burn.

Plan to remove the lead doors next and see what another 300 lbs less feels like. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Think I gained about an inch and a half of lift in the process. Have to climb in rather than hop in.

I need to do that also, maybe even put quick disconnects on the winch.

I used to do a lot of competitive sailboat racing, in fairly big (> 40') boats. One of the local gurus used to tell everyone that if they wanted a cheap way to go faster, just clean out everything that you didn't really need. It was amazing how much difference it made even in boats that carried 10-12 crew.
