I used to do a lot of competitive sailboat racing, in fairly big (> 40') boats. One of the local gurus used to tell everyone that if they wanted a cheap way to go faster, just clean out everything that you didn't really need. It was amazing how much difference it made even in boats that carried 10-12 crew.
