Does anyone use the second T case as an over under box/

They have 15 and 20% over drive and under drive boxes for 2 wheel drive.

That would be pretty cool for four wheel drive.

On some vehicles that is possible, but on Toyota, not. Why? High range (1:1) is just a direct coupling of the input and output shafts. No gears involved, so no way to change the ratio. Only option there is to put on a second transmission (in-line), some writeups on this over on the Pitae4x4 forum.

Has anyone here simply added the lower gear to the transfer case?

I tried to run down the vin number today.
It seems I have a gear drive transfer case, according to the dealer.
And I believe I have 4.11 3rd members, if I'm reading the chart right.

Yes, Me.

Got a deal on a transfer case with 4.7's.

So, I currently run a single case with 4.7's.

Holy Crap, you wouldn't believe the difference off road. I take obstacles nearly idling in first or second gear.

One thing I do miss about the stock 2.28's, is basic trail riding around, between obstacles. The fastest my 4Runner can go, in 4 low, and 5th gear is approx 15MPH with the motor screaming with the 4.7's, but I'm keeping them.

I've been thinking about what you said and for me that's a little over the top.
I'm guessing I can do 45mph in low 4x4 now.
I'd like to do 30mph in low range 5th gear and about 1mph in low range 1st gear at 1500rpm.

Actually the 1mph in low range 1st gear at 1500rpm.
Is the most important part of this want.

Am I asking to much?

Well, to do all of the above would fit a dual case setup likely with lower than stock gears in the rear case. You can play with all the numbers below:

I think the overall consensus will be that the most versatile setup (assuming manual tranny) is as above, dual cases w/ 4.7s in rear case. That gives you options of 1x, 2.2x, 4.7x, or 10.3x. But also most expensive route (extra case + adapter + gearing etc).

With 200+ Billion electrical parts, the world most complicated machine is inside your own skull.

Question Reality.

Have you seen this Toyota 4x4 Parts need $ now add on Sac craigslist? He has a dual cases for sale w/a set of 4.7 gears. Not sure what your willing to spend or how desperate he is, but you could get a good deal.

I caller and they have not returned my call, it's been 24 hours.

A stock transfer case low ratio is 2.8 to 1.
So if you have 2 transfer cases with 2.8 to 1 in series does that give you a 5.60 to 1 final drive ratio?
Plus a 2.8 to 1 option.

Stock gear driven case is 2.28:1:

So double that (2.28 * 2.28) = 5.2:1

I have 2 stock cases in my'91 w/22re w/5.29 gears and 35's. While it is a night and day difference between single and double cases, I found I wouldn't mind having it lower still. If you can find a set w/4.7's it would be the better way to go. I wanted 4.7's, but couldn't pass up the deal I found on stock cases. I will likely upgrade to 4.7's eventually, either that or find a turbo tranny w/the lower first gear.

Swapping in 4.56 diffs will also help w/going slower off road.
