Need a Spot
Hey guys i could use some advice. I have a 1993 4x4, 22re, with 210,000 miles. Purchased truck 8 years ago at 95,000 miles. Have had clutch and timing chain replaced in the past few years. I now have a oil leak coming from the front main, it needs new tires and the other day I was parked on a steep hill, had it in first gear parked, got out of truck and forgot to put emergency brake on, it rolled a foot or so than stopped, rolled another foot or so and stopped before I got back in and put emergency brake on. Is this normal or is the motor about wore out? The truck is in good shape, no rust and everything works fine. Since I have owned the truck all maintenance has been done. The prior owner is a friend who bought it new and took good care of it also. Money is real tight right now and I had hoped to keep it for another 100,000 but I am no mechanic to speak of, other than changing a few parts and the oil etc and I hate the thoughts of replacing the motor (Lack of money). Would appreciate any info, Helton.

My buddy has proven to me that a 22re with over 200,000 is not ready to give up easily. Do a compression check on the cylinders. If the hill were steep enough, I would have thought to myself, "duh.... next time put the e-brake on dummy." Not about the engine being wore out. I wouldn't worry about it if it runs fine. I know my Montero would do the same thing if the hill were steep enough and it runs great. Fix the front seal and drive it another 200k.

As far as the oil leak goes ..... I just replaced my harmonic balancer, 1991 22re. It developed a crack in the key way.
It slung oil every where.

The paper work with the new balancer said they crack because the timing is set wrong. I know that's wrong because I never messed with it and it passed California smog 3 times.
Start looking for the least expensive one now, they run around $150.00.

As far as slowly chugging down the hill goes.
That's why you park cars with the wheels pointed toward the curb and the emergency brake on it San Francisco.
What gear were you in?

Well, given that it's a 22re, even if you don't do a thing to it besides change the oil it will continue to run for a long time. If you can't fix the seal now, just keep checking the oil, but if you do find time and money to change it then you shouldn't have to worry about it for quite some time.

I wouldn't consider the truck rolling a little bit on a hill a sign of anything wrong, even a new engine can leak down pressure in the cylinders and let the vehicle roll (they aren't the lightest of trucks after all). Overall I'd say if your content with how its running then everything is working fine. An old 22re never dies, it just gets worse gas mileage.
