Looking to swap my 3rd member with a LSD. Most Gen 1's I come across at the yards have LSD's. I've done some digging in the archives but most discussions talk 'bout Gen 1 and 3.5 Gen 2's. Not much on the 92-93 compatibility, in my travels anyways. I'm wondering if Mitsu. had some fun with different diff. sizes for the early Gen 2's and how different they might be with the Gen 1's. I promise to spend your 2 cents.

My diff. is 4.875. Which I believe is pretty standard in the Gen 1's, no? So I guess I'm just wondering if the driveshaft bolt pattern is similarly spaced and if the axle shaft spline is the same.

The 92-93 rear ends with disk brakes are different from the gen 1 drum brake ones, Yes they will bolt in but The Gen2's have a thrust block in the center of the diff that sits between the axles, and reqire a different axle lenghth..Ask Lordtrunks what happens if you do this.

You might be able to add or remove the thrustblock from one diff to the other, but that would be speculation on my part. Someone else will havew to elaborate on that one.

Also you'll find that the majority if not all the gen 1 V6 to have 4.62 in the diff. Mitsu went to the 4.88's in 92 probably due to the added weight of the gen 2 (my best guess)while keeping the same 3.0 engine. Once the 3.5 and 3.0 24V were introduced they went back to 4.62 in the diffs.

See you done learned me somethin' already. So chances are despite the possible similarity in axle shaft spline count and driveshaft mating, the thrust block is the issue?

And I suppose I don't want to revert back to the 4.625 ratio. Didn't the early Gen 2 3-liter SOHC base trim lines have the 4.625 also? Did Mitsu. do an LSD on the Gen 2?

if you look on car-part.com, you can get an idea of what was offered in certain years.
i did a search on 93 r&p and got this.

Rear Axle, (3.0L, 6 cyl), 4.63 ratio
Front Axle, (3.0L, 6 cyl), MT
Front Axle, (3.0L, 6 cyl), AT, 4.63 ratio
Front Axle, (3.0L, 6 cyl), AT, 4.88 ratio (SR)
Rear Axle, (3.0L, 6 cyl), 4.88 ratio (SR)

so it looks like you have 2 gear ratios that are out there. if you look at axle-rear diff, it shows some locking diffs available, but i did not look it up for your area.

Yes, but the magical diff he needs (or wants) is a gen 2 3.0 4.88 diff WITH LSD. Probably not going to find it, very rare if not non existant in the US.

Install locking diff (entire assembly) from a later 95/96 SR and call it a day.

OR:

Do some research on the "thrust block" and install LSD out of gen 1 V6...

Gen 1 diffs have thrust blocks that keep the axles from floating around gen 2's have longer axle shafts that butt into each other and there diffs don't have thrust blocks. Really bad things happen with out thrust blocks REAL BAD THINGS
