so he is actually putting in an entire carrier(not sure if that is the right term but i dont mean the 3rd member)? I wonder if you could just put the ring gear from the ford on to the mitsubishi differential?

From the way it sounds hes just putting the Ford carrier in (as in 3rd member) seeing as how he "has to make small mods to the carrier"

so carrier = 3rd member? I've always though of the carrier as the diff itself, like what the spider gears are in. Any way.... this is def an interesting swap.

I was contemplating this excersize too. I'm pretty sure you have to use the Mitsu 3rd member housing & gears on the ford 9" differential (carrier). If only my Pajero wasn't DD too.

I hope we get some results from this. I'd have never thought to even try to swap something like this.

The axle would have to be centered... there's so much going on.

Same here, I had a buddy that at one point in time wanted me to see if a yoter 8" and mitsu 8" had any chance of mating up but I never got around to it.

Any one know the spline count of the 8, 9, and 9.5? Ive seen that guys sig around outerlimits and he MIGHT be using the 9.5 its all rather ing.

Aw ha, I just checked it he said the mitsu 8" goes right into the "9in centre"

So does that mean his mitsu 8in is setting in a 9in Hogshead?

He promises pictures

If I were to consider this I would machine up some 31 spline axles to go in there too.
Why keep the 28 spline axles, they are the weak link.
I have a pile of Ford 9" stuff here, just no Mitsu 9" out of the chassis.

Cheers, Charlie

The Mitsu 9.5" rear end is 31 spline and so is a big bearing Ford 9". The stock mitsu axles should fit right into the ford 31 spline carrier. The carrier bearings and ID of the ring gear would be the only issues I can forsee.

Just because the splines are the same doesn't mean the axles will fit. There's quite a bit to consider.

Axle diameter, Spline, length.
Bearings shouldn't matter because he's swapping the WHOLE ford 3rd member into the Mitsubishi housing.

Does the ford 3rd member put the center into the centerline of the axletubes?

Is the bolt pattern around the edge the same? Sealing surface around the edge?

Does it even fit in there at all?
