It's been close to a week now that I've used the link you suggested above, and have not experienced a problem. Eliminating the earlier part of the login process, everything preceding the "forums choice" page seems to solve the problem. What does this tell us?

Admittedly, it's only a workaround, a band-aide fix, but it works, and it helps to narrow down the problem area.
